How to Choose Trail Running Shoes for Women
The best trail shoe is not necessarily the shoe with the most cushioning or the deepest tread. Start with where you run.
Someone running smooth crushed-gravel paths needs less traction and protection than someone descending a rocky mountain trail. Once you understand your terrain, compare outsole grip, cushioning, heel-to-toe drop, fit and protection.
Match the traction to the trail
The raised pieces of rubber underneath a trail shoe are called lugs.
Lugs bite into soft or uneven surfaces. In general, deeper lugs provide more traction in mud, loose dirt and steep terrain. Shallower lugs tend to feel smoother on hard-packed trails and sections of pavement.
The Hoka Speedgoat 7 uses 5 mm Vibram Megagrip lugs, making it well suited to rough terrain. The Cascadia 20 and Peregrine 16 both use 4 mm Vibram lugs, giving them plenty of trail grip without making them quite as aggressive underfoot.
If your route regularly includes several miles of pavement, a true road-to-trail shoe may be a better choice than any deeply lugged model.
Choose cushioning based on distance and terrain
More cushioning can protect your feet from repeated impacts during long trail runs.

Understand heel-to-toe drop
Heel-to-toe drop is the height difference between the heel and forefoot.

Make sure your toes have room
Trail shoes need a secure heel and midfoot because your foot moves in several directions on uneven ground. But the front of the shoe also needs enough space.
Your feet can swell during long runs, and downhill sections push the foot toward the front of the shoe. If your toes already touch the end while standing, repeated downhill running can become painful quickly.

Choose the Cascadia 20 if you want a more planted all-around trail trainer. One important update is that Brooks removed the forefoot rock plate found in older Cascadias after adding more cushioning, so I would not describe the Cascadia 20 as a rock-plate shoe.
The Peregrine 16 is the more nimble option. Its 32/28 mm stack and 4 mm drop keep it lower than many max-cushion competitors, while Saucony upgraded the outsole to full-coverage Vibram Megagrip.
